Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Earn Initial Wins Following Player Detentions

NBA game action

Miami scored 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies

Miami Heat earned a overwhelming 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their first NBA game after guard Rozier was arrested for suspected illegal gambling.

Trail Blazers coach Billups was additionally arrested in connection with a sweeping FBI probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.

But, the Heat were focused as they put up 86 first-half scores to be ahead of the Grizzlies by 39 after two quarters, the biggest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year existence.

Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and later said Terry had the support of the team.

"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."

Heat coach Spoelstra added: "Terry is a person who is very dear to everyone. He's had a real positive impact on our team.

"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces the situation."

Portland also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' absence and leading the team to a convincing 139-119 win over the Warriors.

"Everyone experienced positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the first time, NBA commissioner Silver stated he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.

"Nothing is more critical to the league and supporters than the fairness of the competition," he told Amazon Prime. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."

Silver also said an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he played for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.

"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the betting companies," he continued.

"We investigated that situation and were open regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.

"So, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they announced recently was an indictment.

"Moreover 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of any offense, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and investigating."
