Heroic Train Staff Member Endures Critical Injuries During Multiple Stabbing Attack on High-Speed Service

A courageous train staff member who intervened to protect travelers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.

Particulars of the Terrifying Incident

CCTV footage reportedly shows the employee attempting to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Bystanders described a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers fleeing through compartments.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Police declared a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Emergency Reaction and Aftermath

The incident on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in medical facilities after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five people have now been released from hospital.

A bystander filmed the individual waving a big knife and being shot with a stun device as he confronted police on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."

“This terrible incident has affected many people. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – particularly the brave employee of train personnel whose family are being assisted by specialist personnel,” said a senior law enforcement officer.

Union Reaction and Appeals for Measures

Train associations were swift to praise staff and call for increased measures. A labor official stated he would be “seeking immediate discussions with government, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the best possible support, tools and effective procedures in operation”.

Another union representative urged the train operator and authorities “to move quickly to review safety, to support the impacted employees, and to make sure nothing like this occurs again”.

Driver Praised for Quick Thinking

The operator who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“He didn’t halt the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he carried on going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much already there,” explained a association official.

Additional Information

Authorities said they got the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness recounted initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but soon realized from people's faces that it was serious.

Police have stated there is no evidence to indicate the incident was a terrorist attack and have requested the community to provide with any additional details.

Rail services on the impacted route are expected to experience disruption until the following day, with travelers advised to postpone their travel where feasible.

Individuals with details that could assist the investigation are encouraged to reach authorities by sending a message a designated number with a reference code.
