A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Romance
In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies focuses on collecting baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing treasure beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more curious about the underlying economics behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest is piqued when he catches sight of a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous creature he expected.
A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin communities are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. Both groups portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet both maintain prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. The fairies are said to be self-centered types, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually bright and advanced in technology.
Naturally, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as fairly bloodthirsty, though not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Overall Impression
You won’t find very many animated films targeting the viewer group that is beginning to have early romances, but are not mature enough for the content teenagers are watching in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
